SunSentinel Interview About Major Patient Brokering Trial

The South Florida SunSentinel interviewed Ron for its front page story about an addiction recovery CEO going to trial to fight his 119 felony charges. For the article, the veteran reporter, Marc Freeman, reached out to Ron for his insight about the case that “prosecutors say is one of the most significant cases from a mission to target fraud among the region’s drug-addiction recovery businesses.”

Ron Herman, a West Palm Beach criminal defense lawyer who isn’t connected to the Kiger case said the trial is the biggest test to date of all the task force cases. Herman has represented sober home owners facing these charges. He says the jury will have to decide: ‘Was this all about making money or was it a legitimate business to help patients? Did this rise to a criminal action?’

Government Priority

As we explain in our Healthcare Fraud page, the opioid crisis has led to record-setting takedown operations and widespread patient brokering investigations. There is always the risk in these high profile, multi-agency operations for the government to cast the net too wide, where innocent people get swept up along with bad actors.  Ron has significant experience with these types of cases and has a published article about the Florida Patient Brokering Act. As a former prosecutor and now a respected defense lawyer, Ron is frequently tapped for his legal analysis of complex issues and for high profile cases.
